Short cycling means your furnace turns on, runs for a few minutes and shuts off again, over and over. It wastes energy, leaves rooms unevenly heated and puts extra wear on parts. Here are the most common causes.

A clogged air filter

A dirty filter restricts airflow, so the furnace overheats and a safety switch shuts it down. Once it cools, it starts again and the cycle repeats. This is the easiest problem to fix: check your filter and replace it if it looks gray or dusty.

Blocked vents and returns

Furniture, rugs or closed vents can limit airflow the same way a dirty filter does. Make sure supply vents and return grilles are open and clear.

A dirty flame sensor

On gas furnaces, the flame sensor confirms that the burners lit. A coating of residue can make it miss the flame, so the furnace shuts down for safety a few seconds or minutes after starting.

Thermostat location

A thermostat near a heat source, in direct sun or right next to a supply vent can read warm too quickly and shut the system off early.

A furnace that is too large

An oversized furnace heats the space too fast and shuts off before it completes a full, efficient cycle.

When to call us

Start with the filter and vents. If your furnace still short cycles, request a quote. We test airflow, ignition and safety controls, find the actual cause and fix it the first time.
